A little more info about the Hall

Peter and Amanda took over as the custodians the Hall in 2016, and have been slowly and carefully reimagining aspects of the building and business ever since. This is absolutely key to the feel of the place: nobody swooped in from afar with shareholders and a fixed budget or punishing conversion timeframe, imposing a polished and blanket aesthetic. Instead, Brownber is absolutely of the moment: rustic, various, sweet, fun. Proper thought has been applied to the interiors giving the property its own unique style, a mixture of vintage, reclaimed, handmade and reupholstered furniture, with contemporary pieces. Masses of books, prints, photographs, rugs. Softly sanded floorboards. Beautiful William Morris wallpaper kept from the hotel’s previous incarnations.

There’s a wonderfully relaxed, sociable feel here with plenty of space for everyone to spread out. There are two large sitting rooms, a dining room (with a large dining table seating up to 16) and a beautiful recently renovated kitchen sprawling across the ground floor, making the Hall the perfect location for get-togethers with family and friends.  If the sun is shining, you can spill out onto the south-facing terrace or into the garden with mature trees and smooth lawns, which have beautiful views overlooking the fells, with dining and barbecue facilities

You’ll find a welcome hamper of freshly-baked sourdough, a jar of award-winning marmalade plus homemade cakes and biscuits waiting for you on arrival.

Brownber is set within a wonderfully rural location, away from the crowds but still well-placed a day out in the Lakes or the Dales. It provides the perfect base for outdoor adventures. Join the Coast-to-Coast path for some serious walking, explore sleepy country lanes by bicycle, enjoy a bracing plunge in one of the many local wild swimming spots or hop onto the wonderfully scenic Carlisle to Settle railway. Return to deep comfort, dark skies, a barbecue and a fire pit. Smardale nature reserve is just on your doorstep and Kirkby Stephen is about seven miles away for stocking up.

Brownber Hall has been featured in the Sunday Times, The Telegraph, Guardian, Condé Nast, Harper's Bazaar, House and Garden, Suitcase Magazine, Vanity Fair and Marie Claire. It was also named iPaper 2019 Hotel of the Year before pivoting to become a private rental post Covid-19.
