Hill Walking/Long Distance

Hill walking in the Howgill Fells - you can walk all day without seeing another person (maybe just a wild horse or two) - up to the Calf via Cautley Spout.

We are just off the Coast to Coast path and the Dales highway.

 

Kennedys Chocolate Factory

Kennedys Fine Chocolate is a small family handmade chocolate factory based in the village of Orton. They have been making luxury chocolates since 1991 using the best quality chocolate and ingredients, producing more than 100 chocolate in all sorts of varieties.

 

Settle To Carlisle Railway

The Settle to Carlisle Railway is one of the most scenic and impressive railways in the UK, with viaducts, tunnels and the wild scenery of the North Pennines, Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales. 

 

Star Gazing

Its superb dark skies are one of the things that make the Yorkshire Dales National Park so special. With large areas completely free from local light pollution, it's a fantastic place to start your stargazing adventure.

We have binoculars, warm blankets and Thermos flask for your hot chocolate you can rent to make a night of it.

Road Cycling

A great route is to cycle from Brownber to Hawes over the Butter Tubs and then up to Tan Hill; the highest pub in England. We are just off the Lakes and Dales cycling route.

Scrambling

Wild Swimming

Wild swimming at Catagill Scar, on the River Eden. There is an almost secret pool in a river glade, just down stream from the ruins of Peddragon Castle.

Wild swimming at Hell Gill at Garsdale Head – A very deep and narrow canyon, almost enclosed, with a stream and impressive rock formations. It descends in easy steps, coming to a 1m waterfall and deep plunge pool.

Horse Riding

Horse-riding in the Howgill fells with Stone Trail Riding Centre as your guide. They even provide hidden picnic lunches on the hillside for you!

Or Park Foot Pony Trekking Ullswater Lake District, offers the beauty of the open fells, giving fabulous views overlooking Lake Ullswater, that will make your experience magical. This is more suited to the novice riders.

 

Fishing

You can buy a day ticket from the local newsagents in Kirkby Stephen, to go trout fishing on the River Eden, either in Kirkby Stephen or Appleby

Golfing

Riverside Golf Club is a picturesque course in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It enjoys an idyllic setting, nestling under the Howgill fells in the village of Ravenstonedale.

Appleby golf course is another local golf course situated alongside the A66, which will be better suited to the more experienced players.

 

Pub

Go to a pub and not buy a drink (its bring your own!) at the 16th Century Temperance pub in Cautley Spout, which is owned by the National Trust.

Or take a walk to Ravenstonedale (1.8 miles) which will lead you to two of our great local pubs, the Black Swan and Kings Head.
